Root Canal Therapy: The Most Common Endodontic Treatment

During a root canal, the affected pulp is removed, the inside of the tooth is cleaned and disinfected and the space is sealed with a biocompatible material. To restore the tooth’s strength and appearance, our dentist will typically place a dental crown over the treated tooth. With modern techniques and anesthesia, root canal therapy is more comfortable than many people expect, allowing patients to keep their natural teeth rather than undergoing extraction.
Additional Endodontic Procedures
In some cases, additional endodontic treatments may be needed. If a root canal-treated tooth develops new infection or does not heal properly, root canal retreatment can be performed to remove any remaining bacteria and restore the tooth. In situations where infection extends beyond the root tip, an apicoectomy may be required. This microsurgical procedure involves removing the infected tissue and sealing the root to prevent further complications.
For younger patients or those with less extensive damage, procedures such as pulpotomy or pulpal debridement may be performed to remove only the infected portion of the pulp, preserving as much healthy tissue as possible.
